1960s Gimson and Slater “Rock n Rest” Lounge chair with Cotton Twill upholstery, £560

Yes, it’s another wonderful chair for you from The Happy Chair Company; a sublime marriage of wooden frame with flowing, aesthetic lines and comfortable, supportive upholstery to create the complete easy chair experience.

Highly prized, and therefore becoming increasingly rare, these stunning chairs are a vintage-lover’s dream. The one-piece frame is of oak and has been refinished ready for many more years of comfortable reclining. We began by stripping away the tired varnish, before a thorough cleaning of the wood. The frame was then sanded with varying grits of paper to rejuvenate the grain, before three liberal coats of Danish Oil were applied to enhance the grain. Finally, three coats of wax were applied and then buffed to a gorgeous, super smooth finish.
As can be seen in the pictures, the broad arms sweep up and broaden out to a generous arm that will support insouciant lounging for many a year. The armrests are teak on the top, both beautiful and durable, and providing a wonderful juxtaposition to the oak.

Famously designed in Norway, and yet manufactured by Gimson and Slater, here in England, the chair features a patented “Rock n Rest” mechanism allowing for a free rock, or a lazy recline in one of 8 positions. The locking mechanism is simple to use, operated by a lever to the right of the frame; simple elegance.

On receiving it here at Happy Chair HQ, it instantly became a bit of a favourite; the comfort of the rocking action has to be experienced. This chair frame has been completely refinished and the mechanism has been fully serviced to provide many years of smooth rocking action.

To compliment the solidity and lines of the frame, a delightful, hard-wearing, yet subtly patterned cotton twill has been used for the chair. Additional button detailing and the often-missing weighted head cushion, complete the ubiquitous vintage look.
