Hello and happy Monday to you!
Now then, with all the chest of drawers, rocking chairs, and school desks we’ve sold and listed recently, you could be forgiven for thinking that woodwork is all we do! But in fact, The Happy Chair Company started out as just that – chairs, and chairs means upholstery. These days, we’ve expanded out to include a wider range of cool and stylish vintage furniture items, but chairs remain at the core of what we do.
Sometimes of course, we hit gold and come across a chair that has original upholstery in amazing condition. In those cases, we simply need to make sure it’s had a thorough clean (with the help of my Bissell Little Green Machine…) , and perhaps give the frames some TLC, too. Some fantastic examples of those kinds of chairs are our Vintage Danish Armchair and our Toothill cocktail chairs.
In other cases, the original coverings are just too far gone, in which case, it’s out with the old and in with the new. New foam cushions (to make sure they’re fire retardant), and new covers – generally in a ‘sympathetic’ style or colour. Our Fritz Hansen armchair, for example, has been reupholstered in a new fabric that is very close in style to the original – only fresh and clean and without the holes; 😉
And then there the complete reworkings, where we use a contemporary fabric or colour combination to really turn a unloved old piece into something new and beautiful. Prime examples of this approach would be our Parker Knoll 988 with its bright velvet coverings, our Greaves and Thomas lounge chair (which has a tiny nod to its origins via the original buttons), and our Red wingback Parker Knoll.
So there you have it! Much more than just woodwork – we’ve got everything from authentic period pieces to funky modern updates – Happy Chairs indeed! All, of course, available via our website. And now we’re branching out into homewares and curios, there’s even more variety to choose from!
Have a fantastic week!
